Report: US Nursing Homes at Risk in Climate Crisis, Situation Worsening

Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

A recently published report by the Senate committees highlights the severe impact of extreme weather events on long-term care facilities in Texas in 2021, drawing attention to the potential risks faced by medically vulnerable and disabled residents during climate change-driven extreme weather conditions. The report reveals that over 100 nursing homes and more than 300 long-term care facilities lost power during a massive snow and ice storm in February 2021, forcing dozens of them to evacuate more than 1,400 residents.

The consequences of the extreme weather conditions were devastating, with two people losing their lives at assisted-living facilities due to the storm. However, it is believed that the death toll could be higher, considering unreported cases. The report raises concerns about regulatory loopholes that have led to inadequate enforcement, making long-term care facilities vulnerable during such events.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for stronger regulations to ensure that homes providing care to vulnerable residents are adequately prepared to handle these events and provide the necessary care for their residents. The report recommends updating the nursing home temperature standard, requiring homes to prepare for extreme weather conditions, coordinating with local utilities to prioritize restoring power to long-term care homes, and making emergency power capacity to heat or cool homes during a power outage a top priority.

The recommendations outlined in the report are essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of medically vulnerable and disabled residents during extreme weather conditions. By implementing these recommendations, the regulatory bodies can ensure that long-term care facilities are adequately equipped to handle these events and provide the necessary care for their residents. It is imperative to take proactive measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future and to safeguard the lives of individuals who depend on long-term care facilities.
