Honduras Ends Diplomatic Relations with Taiwan
Honduras has ended its diplomatic relations with Taiwan, just 11 days after announcing its plan to establish diplomatic ties with China. The decision was communicated by Foreign Minister Enrique Reina, who acted upon instructions from President Xiomara Castro. This move comes after Reina’s recent trip to Beijing to discuss the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties with China. China views Taiwan as a part of its territory, to be taken back by force if necessary. Castro had earlier directed Reina to establish diplomatic relations with China, a decision that would end its ties with Taiwan. The Honduran Foreign Ministry said that the government recognizes the existence of only one China in the world, and that the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China. The government of Honduras has communicated to Taiwan the end of diplomatic relations and has committed to no longer have any official relationship or contact with Taiwan.
