NATO Condemns Russia’s Dangerous and Irresponsible Nuclear Rhetoric
The recent announcement made by Russia regarding its plans to relocate tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus has sparked a strong reaction from officials in both NATO and the European Union. NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu, in a statement released on Sunday, expressed her concern about the situation and stated that the organization is closely monitoring it. Lungescu also stated that NATO has not seen any changes in Russia’s nuclear posture that would warrant a change in NATO’s own approach.
Moreover, Lungescu criticized Russia’s reference to NATO’s nuclear sharing as being misleading, emphasizing that NATO’s allies act in accordance with their international commitments, while Russia has continuously broken its arms control agreements. She also called on Russia to act in good faith and return to compliance with these agreements, while remaining vigilant against Russia’s recent actions.
Similarly, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, expressed his concern about the potential escalation of the situation. Borrell tweeted that hosting Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus would be an irresponsible escalation that threatens the security of Europe. He further emphasized that Belarus has the power to prevent such a move and urged them to do so. He also stated that the EU is ready to respond with further sanctions if necessary.
In general, the response from both NATO and the European Union has been one of deep concern regarding Russia’s plans to move nuclear weapons to Belarus. They have stressed the importance of adhering to international arms control agreements and urged Russia to act responsibly and in accordance with their commitments. As tensions continue to rise in the region, it remains to be seen what steps will be taken to mitigate the risks associated with this situation.
