Lula urges US to cease its encouragement of war in Ukraine
On Saturday, former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called on the United States to cease its encouragement of war in Ukraine and instead promote peace. Lula made these remarks during a press conference in Beijing at the end of his visit, during which he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Lula stated that both the US and the European Union needed to start talking about peace and focus on convincing Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky that peace was in the interest of the whole world.
Lula’s visit to China focused on strengthening ties between Brazil and China and spreading the message that “Brazil is back” as a key player on the global stage. However, Lula is also seeking closer ties with the US and his visit to China comes after a meeting with US President Joe Biden in February. During his visit to China, Lula carried out an economic agenda in Shanghai and a more political one in Beijing.
China and Brazil have not imposed sanctions against Russia following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, and both countries seek to position themselves as mediators to achieve peace. Before his trip, Lula proposed creating a group of countries to mediate in the war, and he stated that he would discuss this with President Xi Jinping. However, Lula did not provide details about the progress of this initiative during his press conference.
Lula emphasized the importance of patience in talking with Putin and Zelensky, but he also emphasized the need to convince countries that are supplying weapons and encouraging the war to stop. His remarks reflect his commitment to promoting peace and stability in Ukraine and his belief that diplomacy, rather than military intervention, is the best approach to resolving conflicts.
