Tragic End for Young Inmate: Assault and Death Days Before Release from Alabama Prison

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

The tragic death of 22-year-old Daniel Williams at Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore, Alabama, has raised serious concerns about the state’s prison system. Williams, who was due for release in two weeks after serving a 12-month sentence for second-degree theft, was found unresponsive in his dorm on October 22. He was declared brain dead upon arrival at the hospital and taken off life support on November 5, dying four days later.

Allegations have surfaced that Williams was subjected to days of torture, beating, and sexual assault by a prison gang. Family members, who started a GoFundMe campaign for his care, claim he showed signs of physical abuse, including bound hands, bruises, and injuries indicative of assault. They were initially informed by the warden that Williams had suffered a drug overdose, a claim contradicted by prison insiders.

The family’s requests for a rape kit were initially denied but were finally conducted on November 1 following legal intervention. The results are yet to be disclosed. Williams’ death is now under investigation, amidst a backdrop of federal scrutiny over Alabama’s prison conditions. In the past two years, at least 12 officers across the Elmore, Staton, and Draper prison complex have been arrested for assaulting inmates.

Staton Correctional Facility has a history of such incidents. For example, in 2018, Correctional Sergeant Devlon Williams was found guilty of assaulting a defenseless prisoner. Additionally, in July 2023, Sergeant D’Marcus Sanders was charged with murder following the death of inmate Rubyn Murray at Elmore Correctional Facility.

The Equal Justice Initiative has labeled Williams’ death as “tragic” and “preventable,” pointing out the frequent occurrence of such incidents in Alabama’s prisons. This case adds to the growing list of concerns about the state’s prison system, previously highlighted in a Department of Justice report and subsequent lawsuit, alleging violations of inmates’ civil rights and unsafe conditions.
