Ukrainian Parliament Member Detained on Treason Charges Amid Russian Conflict
KYIV — In a significant development, Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksandr Dubinsky was arrested on charges of treason, accused of assisting Russia in its ongoing conflict against Ukraine. This arrest has reignited discussions about the controversial efforts by former U.S. President Donald Trump and his associates to discredit current President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.
Dubinsky, who previously aided Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, in seeking damaging information on the Bidens, was taken into custody following an order from a Kyiv court. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the State Bureau of Investigation allege that Dubinsky, along with former parliament member Andriy Derkach and ex-prosecutor Kostiantyn Kulyk, were part of a group controlled by Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU.
The group is accused of conducting “subversive informational activities” to destabilize Ukraine and tarnish its international reputation. The SBU statement highlighted that these actions could lead to up to 15 years in prison and property confiscation for the perpetrators.
This case takes a critical turn as Dubinsky and his group were allegedly established by GRU deputy head Volodymyr Alekseyev and funded with around $10 million. Dubinsky, using the code name “Buratino,” is accused of spreading false information about Ukraine’s military and political leaders, including allegations of Ukrainian interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
The United States had previously sanctioned Dubinsky, Derkach, and Kulyk in 2020 and 2021, citing their links to Russian intelligence services and attempts to meddle in the U.S. election. These sanctions came amidst allegations that Trump abused his presidential power by urging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate the Bidens’ involvement with Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company.
Giuliani’s meeting with Dubinsky and Derkach in Kyiv in 2019, and the subsequent documentary aired on the One America News network, failed to produce any credible evidence of corruption by Joe Biden.
Dubinsky’s arrest marks a critical moment in Ukraine’s efforts to counter Russian influence and sheds light on the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.
