Former elite athlete Oscar Pistorius is set to be released on parole, as announced by South African correctional authorities today. Pistorius, who gained fame as a Paralympic sprinter, was convicted for the 2013 Valentine’s Day killing of his then-girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius, now 37, has served approximately half of his 13-year sentence, making him eligible for parole under South African law. His release is scheduled for January 5. During his trial, Pistorius maintained he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder, firing four shots through a toilet door, a claim that was challenged by the prosecution.

At the peak of his career, Pistorius was a celebrated Paralympian, winning six gold medals on custom-made carbon-fiber prosthetics at the 2012 Games. Born with a genetic defect, Pistorius had both legs amputated below the knee in childhood. His case, marked by lengthy legal battles and global attention, now reaches a significant milestone with his impending release.
