Vice President Harris to Lead U.S. Delegation at COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai
Vice President Kamala Harris is set to attend the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, representing a significant step in the U.S. administration’s commitment to addressing global climate challenges. The summit, which will run from November 30 to December 12, 2023, is a key event for discussing climate action and sustainability efforts worldwide.
The White House confirmed Ms. Harris’s participation on November 29, emphasizing that her visit underlines the administration’s dedication to leading global efforts against the climate crisis. She, along with a delegation of senior U.S. officials from over 20 departments and agencies, will be present at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), set in the United Arab Emirates’ capital.
Ike Irby, the Deputy Domestic Policy Advisor to the Vice President, highlighted during a press call that Ms. Harris’s visit is a continuation of the administration’s proactive stance on climate change. The Vice President is expected to focus on reinforcing U.S. climate objectives, ensuring impactful outcomes at COP28, and unveiling several initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting adaptation, and enhancing climate resilience in collaboration with international partners.
While the specifics of Ms. Harris’s agenda remain undisclosed, it is confirmed that she will participate in multiple engagements on December 2, including speaking at the World Climate Action Summit. This summit, part of the broader COP28 event, will feature high-level roundtables and sessions scheduled for December 1 and 2, with the G77 and China Summit also slated for December 2.
The COP28 is crucial for advancing global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. However, a recent UNFCCC press release indicated that the current pace of progress is insufficient to meet these ambitious goals. Over 70,000 delegates are expected to attend the summit, underscoring its significance as a platform for international dialogue and cooperation on climate action.
Ms. Harris’s presence at COP28, particularly during the World Climate Action Summit, is anticipated to provide an opportunity for engaging with global leaders and addressing pressing issues such as the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Further details on her visit are expected to be announced shortly.
