Secret Service agents assigned to safeguard President Joe Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi Biden, engaged in a shooting incident late Sunday night in Georgetown, Washington D.C., following an attempted break-in of an unmarked Secret Service vehicle. According to an anonymous law enforcement official, the agents observed three individuals attempting to break a window of the parked and unoccupied SUV.

In response to the attempted breach, one agent discharged a firearm. The Secret Service confirmed that no one was injured by the gunfire. The suspects, who were not apprehended at the scene, reportedly fled in a red car. The Secret Service has issued a regional alert to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to locate the vehicle.

The MPD is conducting an investigation into the shooting, as per standard procedure for all police-involved shootings in Washington D.C. The United States Attorney’s Office is set to conduct an independent review of the facts and evidence gathered.

This incident occurs amidst a notable increase in vehicle-related crimes in Washington D.C. Over 750 carjackings and 6,000 reports of vehicle thefts have been recorded this year. Notably, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas was a recent victim of a carjacking near the Capitol. Additionally, violent crime rates in the district have surged by over 40% compared to last year, with U.S. Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota experiencing an assault in February, though she escaped with minor injuries.
